Spiced guava and coconut crumble (with video)

Here in Cape Town the nights are getting longer, mornings are getting chillier and we can no longer deny that winter has arrived! While I love our beautiful summers I can’t say I mind this time of year too much, after all, it’s an excuse to unpack my scarves, light a fire and enjoy some of my favourite winter dishes that warm from the inside out.

Lemon shortbread biscuits (with video)

Lemon shortbread cookies with icing sugar.
One of my all time favourite biscuit recipes, I’ve made these more times than I can remember! In fact, I rustled up another batch this past weekend as we were expecting a couple of visitors and and I knew that these buttery biscuits would be just the thing to serve with the tea.

Angelfish with steamed asparagus and lime beurre blanc

Steamed asparagus

Bonjour! We are getting ever so slightly posh this week with a little help from our French friends. This is the kind of meal usually reserved for those occasions when I have an evening out and can enjoy my dinner at a restaurant, but it is surprisingly simple and perfect for when you want to prepare something extra special at home.

Beurre blanc if you didn’t know is a creamy, butter sauce. It is extremely versatile and can be prepared in many ways – you could add herbs, stock or even red wine. The variations are almost endless, and this is my version.

Back to Basics – Cranberry tea scones

There was a lot of excitement in our house this weekend. Having had a temporary kitchen since we moved into the house three years ago, and after months of planning, preparation and a few weeks of renovation chaos, yesterday saw the completion of our new kitchen! The last box was unpacked on Sunday morning, just hours before we were due to host a family lunch, and that afternoon I could not wait to put our new oven through its paces with a batch of delicious cranberry tea scones.

Cheese croquettes

Bruges, Belgium

You may be wondering why I have included one of my travel photographs at the top of this post. I have not had much opportunity to hop abroad since moving back to S.A. but I love reminiscing about the incredible cities I have been lucky enough to visit over the years. So I have decided to combine two of my favourite pastimes – food and travel – and put together a collection of recipes inspired by those special places. Just to tide me over until the next trip you see.  (These recipes will be hiding under the “Traveling Foodie” tag.)

Lemon and herb chicken with warm chickpea and roasted tomato salad (Dinner in a flash)

Easy lemon and herb chicken recipe.
With a busy Easter weekend drawing to a close I hope you all had a wonderful time! I heard from a couple of you who decided to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into my chocolate hot cross bun recipe – I hope you enjoyed it! After a weekend of treats I thought I would post a lighter, healthier recipe for you all this week.

Chocolate hot cross buns

There is a little back story to this recipe which was inspired by a good friend of mine. She recently left Australia where she has been living for the past few years, and where chocolate hot cross buns are readily available. During a recent chat a few hints were dropped about creating a similar recipe… I suspect that since she will be making her way to Cape Town in the next few weeks (and has confessed to being addicted to them) that she was actually being serious! Well of course I accepted the challenge and thought these would be a gorgeous treat to enjoy at Easter.
