Really delicious classic hot cross buns

Classic hot cross buns

When I was growing up hot cross buns weren’t readily available all year round (as they are now!) and I remember my excitement at seeing them appear on bakery shelves and knowing that Easter holidays were approaching. They are another one of those treats that evoke childhood memories of family gatherings, Easter craft projects and feeling impatient during the Easter Sunday morning church service knowing that there would a chocolate egg hunt afterwards! And of course the memory of enjoying fresh hot cross buns over the Easter weekend.

Apple and cranberry muesli wedges

As most children returned to school this week I read a very funny meme posted by a friend that read: “I’m just not sure how my child will survive back at school without 6 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 367 snacks a day!” Snack time is serious business…parents, you can relate right? 😉 And being prepared with a plethora of wholesome options for snack time makes life so much easier. Raw Turkish delight doughnuts

Inspiration for today’s bite-sized treats comes from Donna Hay’s recipe for raw Turkish delight doughnuts. I adapted her original recipe and was so happy with how they turned out. Date caramel truffles

Date truffles

These date truffles were an absolute hit when I made them at home, and with just a handful of ingredients you can whip up a batch in no time. The sweet date caramel and the dark chocolate pair beautifully, and they’re the perfect treat for when you need a quick sweet hit. You could also wrap them up for someone special, they make a gorgeous edible gift.

Chocolate orange custard tarts

Chocolate and orange custard tarts

I put this recipe together for a Portuguese inspired magazine feature, and since travel has been so restricted these past few months there’s all the more reason to take a culinary trip from the comfort of your own kitchen. Hey, it’s not quite like jetting off to Europe but we can only try, right?
