Easy 3 ingredient homemade lemonade

When I was younger I would spend hours paging through my Mom’s collection of recipe books. She still has a few hardcover notebooks filled with handwritten recipes from family and friends, and magazine clippings that have been pasted in. One of these is Granny’s delicious homemade lemon concentrate recipe.

I’ve adapted the original recipe slightly to make it even easier to make – 3 ingredients, 1 saucepan and a couple of minutes is all you’ll need to whip this up. Once the concentrate has been made and cooled simply dilute it with cold water for a refreshing drink, it’s like nostalgia in a glass.

Making your own lemon concentrate and lemonade from scratch is rather quaint but I love that old fashioned appeal. Some vintage recipes should be left in the past (moulded salad, I’m looking at you) but this lemonade is definitely not one of them. Who knows, maybe it’ll become one of your family favourites too!

Cook’s notes:

  • Keep the lemon concentrate in the fridge for up to a month. The recipe makes 500ml lemon concentrate and 1.75l lemonade.
  • Pop the lemon concentrate in a glass bottle to make a lovely edible gift!

HOMEMADE LEMONADE

  • 180ml (¾ cup) white sugar
  • 300ml boiling water
  • 150ml freshly squeezed lemon juice

1.) Place the sugar and boiling water in a saucepan. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then add the lemon juice.

2.) Place the saucepan over a medium heat and bring to the boil, stirring regularly. Remove from the heat as soon as the mixture starts to boil. Set aside to cool.

3.) To make lemonade mix 1 part lemon concentrate with 2½ parts cold water (or dilute to taste). Store in the fridge.
